The Financial State of 4 North Texas Cities Reveal Mixed Results

(WBAP/KLIF) — Four North Texas cities receive mixed grades on how lawmakers handle their finances.

Truth in Accounting is a non-profit organization that reviews how well cities across the nation balance their budgets and follow through on their financial commitments. According to founder and CEO Sheila Weinberg, Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington and Plano showed up in the Top 75 Financial State of the Cities rankings. Plano was ranked 3rd best in the nation with a tax surplus of $5,100 per taxpayer, while Arlington finished 16th on the list with a $700 tax surplus.

Weinberg says Fort Worth ranked 56th on the list with a tax burden of $7,400, while Dallas ended up 63rd with a taxpayer debt burden of $9,600. In addition, the City of Dallas has nearly $4-billion in debt, due to inadequate funding of the city’s pension plan and retirement health care benefits. Washington D.C. topped the list, while New York City finished last with a taxpayer burden of almost $62,000 per taxpayer.
