Portion of I-635 in Mesquite Named For Fallen Officer

MESQUITE (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A portion of 635 that runs from Laprada Drive to Cartwright/Bruton Road has been dedicated to a fallen Mesquite police officer.

The Texas Department of Transportation installed signage for the Officer Richard Houston II Memorial Highway just before the two year anniversary of his death.

The 20-year veteran officer was killed in the line of duty December 3, 2021. The man convicted of his murder was sentenced to life in prison.

TXDOT made and installed the sign, but the community purchased the markers.

The $40,500 dollar cost came from donations raised by Mesquite Police Association Charities.

“Everyone passing through the City of Mesquite will see these signs and know about Officer Houston’s sacrifice,” said MPAC President Officer Bruce Sales. “Our goal all along has been to have the signage installed by the second anniversary date of his end of watch. We appreciate the way the community showed their support for Officer Houston’s legacy and service.”
