Senator Cornyn in North Texas Addressing Gun Control and Legislature

GRAPEVINE (WBAP/KLIF)- U.S. Senator John Cornyn is in North Texas to address gun control and legislature regarding the two most recent mass shootings.

Senator Cornyn said he’s spoken to Governor Greg Abbott and is working on what Texas can do to improve the compliance with the background check system. “This means people who are already legally disqualified from purchasing firearms can make sure they can’t lie and buy because the background check system doesn’t have their name in the system as it should,” Cornyn said.

Fort Worth Mayor Price is among more than 200 U.S mayors calling for the Senate to vote on legislation to strengthen background checks for gun sales. Cornyn said there are limitations to what the Government can force the states to do, the Federal Government can’t compel the states but can provide incentives.  Cornyn said he’s spoken with Senator Mitch McConnell on if calling an emergency session is necessary. He said they will bring fresh ideas to the table next legislative session. “I think there’s a lot of information that still needs to come from both investigations in El Paso and Dayton that will help inform the decision we make,” Cornyn said. “We all want this handled and addressed as soon as possible but I think this is the right way for us to do it in a way that it’ll be most effective,” he said.

Cornyn said all cases are different and the shooter in El Paso was motivated by racial hatred. Because of this, they are also looking into if federal laws against domestic terrorism need to be updated. He said there’s a lot of work to be done and they will address it next session.
