Bidding War Develops in Auction of Removed Robert E. Lee Statue

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A bidding war is developing over the Robert E. Lee statue removed per city council vote from a Dallas park in 2017.

The same council voted earlier this year to sell the 1936 Alexander Phimister Proctor, ”Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Soldier” sculpture at auction for no less than $450,000. The amount would allow the city to recoup the funds spent to take the statue down.

The bidding ends Wednesday, June 5.

The first bid was placed May 26 by user ‘Mustang Jerry’ for $450,000. On May 31, six bids were placed moving the top amount to $552,500. The user ‘LawDude’ bumped the bid to $555,000 Monday. As of Tuesday morning, ‘Mustang Jerry’ held the highest bid at $557,000.

A total of nine bids have been made since the piece went up for auction. Bids can be posted on the LSO Auction website.
