Dallas City Council Briefed by Confederate Monuments Task Force

DALLAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Dallas City Council was briefed by a task force appointed by Mayor Mike Rawlings on Wednesday to recommend plans for confederate statues and street names in Dallas.

Mayor Pro-Tem Dwaine Caraway defended his vote to remove the Robert E.Lee statue from Lee Park.

“Just like they took down Saddam Hussein statue, I hate to bring it up, but they tore it down and tore it up. Just picture Robert riding around with a chain around his kneck down the street…destroyed. Do we destroy or do we do as policy makers to at least protect it?” said Caraway.

Jennifer Scripps with the Office of Cultural Affairs told the council that the task force went over the details of this situation carefully.

“They looked at the monuments separately the Robert E. Lee and Confederate soldier. The Confederate monument, which is the one in front of the Convention Center, Fair Park, street names and then the places with Confederate names,” she said.

The task force proposed that the Robert E. Lee statue, which was removed from Lee Park in September, be put in a museum.

It also recommended that the names of several streets and parks with Confederate names be changed.

It’s an issue that struck a nerve in Dallas, sparking protests both for and against the removal of the statues.
