Police Identify Active Shooter Suspect, Killed by Fort Worth SWAT

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF) – A suspect, 19-year-old Markevvion Devonte Cannon is in dead following a shooting and hostage situation on the west side of Ft. Worth.  Police received a phone call from a woman who said a man was holding her and three others hostage inside an apartment in the 2900 block of Broadmoor. The hostages ages range from 12-19 years old.

Fort Worth Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus said the suspect, also used a child as a human shield. “He shot at officers and one of the rounds struck the officers shield,” Kraus said. “Because he was holding the child as a human shield officer’s weren’t able to fire back…they evacuated the apartment complex and surrounding area and called for SWAT backup,” he said.

Fearing for the lives of the hostages, SWAT officers developed a hostage rescue plan and entered the apartment. They observed Cannon with the handgun in the master bedroom closet with the hostages, seated on the floor.  Cannon failed to comply with the officers’ orders to surrender and raised his weapon. One Fort Worth SWAT officer, a nine-year veteran, fired one shot, striking Cannon. The officer is currently on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol.

Cannon later died at a local hospital.

Police say none of the hostages or officers were injured.  Police say Cannon was at the apartment to visit his ex-girlfriend and infant child they share together. However, there was an active warrant for Cannon for Assault Bodily Injury Family Member/Previous Conviction with an emergency protective order request from Cannon assaulting his ex-girlfriend on May 21, 2019. An altercation ensued, which led to the resulting call for police.
