Dallas City Council Approves Auction of Robert E. Lee Statue

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas City Council voted Wednesday to sell the Robert E. Lee statue it voted to be removed from a Dallas park in 2017.

The statue that sat in Oak Lawn Park, formerly Lee Park, has been stored in a facility since its removal 18 months ago.

A 12-3 vote Wednesday by the City Council allowed for its auction as long as it recoups the $450,000 spent to have it removed.

“I’ve heard loud and clear from part of my district that they were very concerned about the cost of taking down the statue,” outgoing Councilman Kevin Felder said.

Councilman Lee Kleinman voted in favor of the sale.

“Because we do have the option to refuse any bid that comes forward,” said Kleinman. “But secondly, because I don’t want to put anything in the way of the disposal of this piece.”

The vote comes while the city awaits removal of a separate Confederate monument from Pioneer Park.
