Thousands of Brazilians flooded the streets this weekend in massive Independence Day demonstrations, underscoring the deep political divide gripping the country as former President Jair Bolsonaro faces a likely conviction on charges of attempting to overturn the results of the 2022 election.
In cities from São Paulo to Brasília, rival rallies broke out Saturday, with conservative demonstrators draped in Brazilian yellow-green jerseys and American flags demanding an end to what they call a “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro.
Counterprotesters, largely aligned with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s left-leaning government, urged the courts to move forward with a conviction, calling Bolsonaro a threat to democracy.
