Federal Judges Admit Using AI in Botched Rulings

Two federal judges have admitted they issued rulings that were botched by the use of artificial intelligence (AI), resulting in embarrassing mistakes.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) released responses Thursday from U.S. District Judges Henry T. Wingate of Mississippi and Julien Xavier Neals of New Jersey, as well as from Administrative Office of the Courts (AO) Director Robert Conrad, concerning the judges’ use of generative artificial intelligence to draft court orders that contained significant errors.

Both judges acknowledged that their staff had used generative AI to prepare draft orders that included incorrect citations, references to individuals not involved in the cases, and fabricated quotations attributed to defendants.
