FORT WORTH – WBAP/KLIF – Three people are dead following a shooting at a church Sunday morning in White Settlement.
According to MedStar, one person died at the scene and another died en route to a local hospital.
While speaking with reporters Sunday afternoon White Settlement Police confirmed the shooter at West Freeway Church of Christ was among the dead.
“A gunman entered the church and opened fire,” said Police Chief J.P. Bevering. “One person was killed and another was seriously injured.”
The Chief said parishioners inside the church returned fire and killed the gunman.
“Today evil walked boldly among us,” said Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn. “But let me remind you that good people raised up and stopped us before it got worse.”
According to Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick the men who shot the gunman were members of a voluntary church security team. A law passed in 2017 allowed for similar security teams.
Multiple agencies are investigating what led to the shooting.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott Released the following statement:
“Our hearts go out to the victims and families of those killed in the evil act of violence that occurred at the West Freeway Church of Christ. Places of worship are meant to be sacred, and I am grateful for the church members who acted quickly to take down the shooter and help prevent further loss of life. Cecilia and I ask all Texans to join us in praying for the White Settlement community and for all those affected by this horrible tragedy.”
