DENTON – WBAP/KLIF – Fundraising for recreational, off-site trips for residents of the State School in Denton is still underway, and organizers say they may hit the $200,000 mark for the year ahead. In charge of this project, Susan Dean, Director of Community Relations for Texas Health and Human Services, says multiple outings are planned for residents such as occasional outings for pizza, a burger; trips to the zoo and aquarium. Dean says the state can only fund so much, and this fundraising provides for the residents to get out and enjoy what the rest of the community does for the entire year.
Dean says holiday gifts are still being accepted for residents as well – with an average age of55 years, and Dean says the parents of many residents have passed on or are unable to visit and or send holiday treats. She says the holidays can be difficult for residents who must spend that time without loved ones and often, without gifts or acknowledgement from outside the school.
The State School accepts online donations through this link: http://www.vscdenton.org ,which is the Volunteer Services Council; a 501C3 non-profit organization that distributes donations.
