Houston Police Chief Blasts McConnell & Texas Lawmakers Over Guns

Houston (WBAP/KLIF) – After a Houston police sergeant was shot dead over the weekend by a domestic abuse suspect, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo came down hard on congressional Republicans, suggesting that they’re bowing to the NRA over gun reform.

“The NRA doesn’t like the fact that we want to take firearms out of the hands of boyfriends that abuse their girlfriends, and who killed sergeant? A boyfriend abusing a girlfriend!,” said Acevedo during a press conference

Acevedo called out Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, and U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, asking “Whose side are you on?”

Veteran Houston Police officer Christopher Brewster had just been promoted to sergeant about a week before his death.

He and fellow officers had been called to a domestic violence call.

Brewster had gotten out of his vehicle and called out to suspect Arturo Solis who was armed with two guns. Brewster had not pulled out his firearm before he was shot.

Solis, a repeat offender told investigators that he shot the officer because he “didn’t want to go back to jail.”

Chief Acevedo is calling for re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act.
