DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas Police Department is launching a 6 month pilot program to help reduce crime in high crime areas across the city with the use of technology.
Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall said Monday that the ‘Starlight’ program allows Officers to view surveillance video in real time at participating businesses from a remote location. ‘Safer Dallas’ and ‘Motorola’ are partners in the program.
With the use of the technology, Police Officers at headquarters will be able to see in real time exactly what is happening at establishments that will be using the technology. The officers can immediately dispatch a patrol unit to the scene. The software embedded in the system has the ability to recognize anomalies that might indicate a crime in progress, such as a camera being covered or tampered with, or sudden movements by individuals in view of the camera.
Chief Hall said the technology will help keep Officers safe because they will know ahead of time what to expect before arriving at a potential crime scene.
“We focus on data driven solutions,” said Chief Hall. “And that is what we used to select these three locations. We looked at the highest calls for service throughout the city.”
The following stores are a part of the launch:
- 7-Eleven, 2911 E. Ledbetter Road – Council Member Carolyn Arnold’s District 4
- 7-Eleven, 2503 Lemmon Avenue – Council Member David Blewett’s District 14
- Ferguson Food Mart and Texaco Gas Station – Council Member Paula Blackmon’s District 9
Each store is equipped with cameras, signage and a blue light. Police expect the program to help prevent crime and improve police response times. the program took effect last week at three gas stations across the city.
