DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- Volunteers with the North Texas Salvation Army are preparing warm meals outside of the Greater Cornerstone Baptist Church on Forest Lane to deliver to those affected by the tornado.
Lieutenant Armando Acosta with the Salvation Army said they sent out scout units to find the areas with the biggest need and deliver food. “With people not having a refrigerator that’s working or no gas to cook anything this is something is good for them to be able to get a cooked meal and they can get as many as they want for their family,” said Acosta. “Obviously food is probably the best thing to keep people’s spirits up,” he said.
He said they anticipate serving 500 meals in one afternoon and will alter assess for dinner. Anyone is also welcome to pick up meals at the mobile cooking truck outside the church. “We are giving it to anyone who needs food, we don’t turn down anyone and we don’t except any money,” said volunteer Frank Culvert who made Frito Pie for everyone.
Volunteers took meals and went into neighborhoods that took a direct hit. Mika Manester lives near the Home Depot on Forest lane. Volunteers with Salvation Army brought her food for her family and they prayed. “The house is a total loss so right now I just want my children to be okay and not scared because my 7-year-old is freaking out.. we were all in the closet when our roof came off, it was awful,” she said.
Manester said she’s looking for a hotel to stay in and it will take around 8 months to find a new home. She said in all of this mess, she’s thankful for the support. “I have so many good friends…Salvation Army is here and just family and outpouring of people who just want to help and that means more to me than anything,” she said.
