The jets were grounded worldwide in the wake two deadly international plane crashes that claimed the lives of 346 people.
Boeing blamed the crashes on a software glitch that the aircraft titan is currently working to resolve.
In a statement on its website, American said it “anticipates that the impending software updates to the Boeing 737 Max will lead to recertification of the aircraft later this year and resumption of commercial service in January 2020. We are in continuous contact with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation.”
Meanwhile, a Southwest Airlines spokesman said the carrier had already removed the Max from its schedule through January 5, 2020. The Dallas-based carrier owns 34 of the jets.
