Dallas County Prioritizing Census Heading Into 2020

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Dallas County is working with the city of Dallas to make sure next year’s census is as accurate as possible.

Appearing on our media partner WFAA’s “Inside Texas Politics,” Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said the county plans on contracting a vendor that will knock on people’s doors, among other things.

“It’s your civic duty to fill out that census, and we’ve got to get this right,” Jenkins said. “It matters for representation and the districts, and it matters for the money.”

Jenkins said the county misses out on about $15,000 for each person who does not fill out the census.

“So a family of five, that’s $75,000 in benefits to our schools, public safety, and roads,” Jenkins said. “It’s very important we do our civic duty and fill out that census.”

Jenkins said it’s one of his top priorities heading into next year.

“Dallas County is a very diverse place. We have a higher percentage of hard-to-counts than Collin County and some of our neighbors,” Jenkins said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us.”
