DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A jury has found former Mesquite police officer Derick Wiley not guilty of aggravated assault in a trial where he was accused of shooting an unarmed man in 2017.
Wiley was charged in the shooting of Lyndo Jones who Wiley thought was in a stolen vehicle. The vehicle turned out to belong to Jones who was unarmed during the confrontation.
Both Jones and Wiley testified during the trial at the Frank Crowley Courthouse west of Downtown Dallas.
The jury deliberated Monday after getting the case Friday afternoon. They asked for lunch late Monday morning and announced they had reached a verdict shortly after that.
The first trial of Wiley ended with a hung jury.
“I want to thank God and pray for Mr. Jones,” said Wiley moments after the verdict was read. “I just want my life back. That’s all I want.”
Wiley said he has already begun the appeals process to try and get his job back with Mesquite PD.
“I was born to be a Police Officer,” said Wiley.
The City of Mesquite released the below statement following the verdict:
“The City of Mesquite respects the decision of the jury. Due to pending litigation, we have no further statement at this time.”
