Denton, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – In Denton over the weekend city council member Jesse Davis hosted a community conversation dubbed “Conversation Over Controversy” on a potential ordinance protecting the rights of LGBTQ individuals; Fort Worth, Dallas and Plano all have such protections.
Denton resident Amber Briggle spoke at the forum she is the mother of a trans 11-year old who started transitioning in first grade.
“It surprises that Denton is kind of behind of the times on this. I’m hoping we can come together on some things. This is a human rights issue … we can all agree as Texans on equality.”
Briggle, who spoke at the forum a “big deal” for the city.
DentonRC.com reports that panelists spoke in front of a full house Saturday at Denton City Hall on whether the city should adopt such an ordinance or whether such a policy would restrict religious freedom.
Briggle told the group, “Increasing protections for the LGBTQ community would not weaken the rights and protections for others.”
The issue centers around specifically providing protections against discrimination for LGBTQ people based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.
There is currently no federal law on the books that does this.
