7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Southern California Friday; Follows 6.4 Independence Day

UPDATE: 07.06.2019  3:01 pm – Earthquake again revised in magnitude to 7.1 on the Richter scale.  Fires from gas line breaks and leaks are being tapped, first responders are going door to door searching for people who may injured and require help, and some homes have been knocked off foundations.  While damage is limited compared to the size of the big quakes, officials warn many structures are weakened by the rattlers, making them more dangerous with the expected aftershocks.  Seismologist say the aftershocks, which can be larger than the initial quake, which happened in this case, can continue for days or weeks.

LOS ANGELES – WBAP/KLIF – An earthquake measuring 6 point 9 on the Richter scale Friday night follows a 6  point 4 rattler in the same area on Independence day.   Damage, injuries and fires are reported.  The original quake is now called a “fore-quake”, which means the initial quake was not as strong as aftershocks.

More than 1700 aftershocks have been reported in the region since the initial quake hit July 4th.  U S Geological Survey says there’s a 5% chance another quake could be even stronger.  This second quake was centered about 11 miles from the original quake in Ridgecrest California.   Reports indicate both quakes were felt in Las Vegas and down through Mexico.

Damage estimates remain to be assessed; first responders are now working in Ridgecrest to help those injured in the Friday night quake.
