Driver of Athens ISD School Bus Involved in Deadly Train Accident Indicted

ATHENS, Texas (WBAP/KLIF News) – The driver of the Athens ISD school bus involved in a deadly accident involving a train has been indicted on injury to a child and manslaughter charges.

78-year-old John Franklin Stevens of Maybank was behind the wheel when the bus was hit by a Union Pacific freight train at a crossing on January 25th.

There were two children on the bus. 13-year-old Christopher Bonilla was killed and a 9-year-old girl was injured.

In a statement, the Henderson County District Attorney’s Office said the bus stopped at the crossing before proceeding the train, which collided with the bus and pushed it a quarter of a mile down the track.

Stevens has been released on bonds totaling $10,000.00.

Athens is about 70 miles southeast of Dallas.
