CARROLLTON (WBAP/KLIF) – The mother of a newborn baby girl found dead in a flower pot at a Carrollton cemetery is under arrest.
Lopez is charged with Capital Murder by intentionally and knowingly causing the death of a child under 10 years of age. She was arrested Tuesday in Carrollton without incident. Lopez is now held in the Denton County Jail on $500,000 bond.
According to the Carrollton Police Department, a caretaker at the Perry Cemetery emptied what he knew to be an out of place flowerpot on March 11 and found the body of a deceased infant beneath the pot’s soil. Lopez turned herself into Police March 29 after seeing news coverage of that discovery.
According to the arrest affidavit, Lopez didn’t tell anyone she was pregnant. When the baby was born in the closet of her apartment complex, Lopez told Police she tried to silence the baby by covering her mouth. The baby died and Lopez allegedly put her in the flower pot and took her to the cemetery with a friend the next day.
