ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Texas Department of Agriculture is warning consumers to be cautious after one of its inspectors found a credit card skimmer at a gas station in Arlington.
It was found on the pump at the Valero Smart Mart on West Randol Mill Road and North Cooper Street but has since been removed.
Criminals use the difficult to spot devices to collect a customer’s credit or debit card information while they’re getting gas.
Agriculture Commissioner Sif Miller released a video offering tips for North Texans to avoid getting scammed.
He advised customers who are paying at the pump to choose the credit card option instead of debit, keep your receipt and check to see if the credit card scanner has been tampered with.
“Look for damage to the cabinet, most cabinets will have a seal on it. Report that to the clerk,” he said.
Miller also suggests consumers to check for unusual blue tooth signals on their phones because a string of long letters or numbers may indicate a skimmer has been placed on the pump.
The department has not said how long the skimmer has been there or how many people may have been victimized in the scam.
If you think you’ve been victimized, call 1-800-TELL-TDA to report the crime.
