Dallas Residents Have Option to Text 9-1-1

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Texting 9-1-1 is now an option for residents of Dallas.

Cities like LA, New York, and Chicago have already launched programs to text 9-1-1. Locally, Plano and San Antonio allow residents to text an emergency. Dallas unveiled a “soft launch” of the program late last year and will roll out the plan in its entirety next month.

“I’m very excited about this,” said Dallas City Councilman Phillip Kingston. “Now millenials will be able to contact first responders. Hopefully not using emojis.”

Calling 9-1-1 is still encouraged but the program meant will benefit people who may be deaf or have a speech impediment. Videos, photos, or emojis won’t be delivered.
