Washington – (WBAP/KLIF) – Reaction is coming in to President Trump’s 2nd State of the Union address.

There were are issues that North Texas Congressmen from both parties agree on after the speech. Freshman Democratic Representative Colin Allred was looking to hear something about improving the nation’s infrastructure, and lowering the cost of prescription medication; those issues were addressed during the speech.

And, Republican Representative Michael Burgess also said lowering prescription drug costs is a priority.

In a statement, Burgess said, “As the most senior physician serving in Congress, I am honored to work alongside president trump to lower drug costs and make the health care system work for – and not against – american patients and doctors.”

President Donald Trump called for bipartisanship, but also stuck with his hard-line immigration policies.

That stance drew cheers from Republican lawmakers and silence from Democrats. Trump’s speech sought to shore up Republican support that had eroded slightly during the recent partial government shutdown. His remarks also previewed a fresh defense against Democrats as they ready a round of investigations into every aspect of his administration.

(FULL SPEECH)

Looming over the president’s annual major address was the Feb. 15 deadline for achieving a budget agreement to avert another shutdown.

Meantime, a CBS reports that their national poll show s 76% of Americans who tuned in approved of the speech. Just 24 percent disapproved. The network says the people who watched tonight’s speech leaned more towards the president’s own party, compared to Americans overall.

“Among those who watched Tuesday night’s address, that figure was 43 percent, and Republicans helped bolster the overall approval of the address.”

In the Democratic response, Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams called the record 35-day shutdown a political stunt that “defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned not just our people, but our values.”
