(WBAP/KLIF) – Authorities near Houston continue to search for the shooter in a drive by shooting that killed a black 7-year-old girl while the community rallies around her family.
Police believe the Sunday shooting was random but won’t speculate on a motive. Activists believe the shooting may have been racially motivated. The suspect is described as a white man in his 40’s.
While investigators focus on catching a killer a community honors a girl remembered as sweet and innocent.
“She was a wonderful young angel with a full life ahead of her,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “It’s our understanding that she wanted to be a teacher.”
Gonzales says his department is dedicated to finding the killer. Reward money in the killing reached $100,000 and a community rally is planned for Saturday. Houston Texans Wide Receiver Deandre Hopkins tweeted an image of Jazmine and pledged to donate his check from this weekend’s playoff game to help the family with funeral expenses.
When I see Jazmine Barnes’ face, I see my own daughter. I’m pledging my playoff check this week to help her family with funeral costs and to support @shaunking @SherriffED_HCSO @SylvesterTurner in bringing this man to justice. On Saturday, I will be playing in your honor, Jazmine pic.twitter.com/oCRYSgfGO9
