DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The prosecution and defense both rested after final testimony was heard Friday in the murder trial of former Balch Springs Police Officer Roy Oliver.
Oliver is accused of shooting 15-year-old Jordan Edwards to death last year.
Two sisters who were in a car that hit Roy Oliver’s truck when he was off duty testified Friday that Oliver pulled a gun on the driver. The Judge initially ruled not to hear testimony from the women, but they were called as rebuttal witnesses by the prosecution after Oliver testified about the accident Thursday. Oliver said he doesn’t remember pointing the gun at the women. They told a different story.
“It was just some stranger that we had just hit,” Ashley Cuevas told prosecutors. “And he was demanding my sister’s license and all of her information as he was pointing the gun at my sister. At her head.”
Before testimony ended, Dallas County Assistant District Attorney M. Leighton D’Antoni was called to the stand to testify about a DWI trial in 2013 when Oliver was put on the stand.
“He was very hostile,” D’Antoni said.
He said Oliver acted like he didn’t want to be there because he had just worked the night shift. D’Antoni said Oliver cursed while on the stand.
“Mr. Johnson tried to lead him a little bit into the answer,” said D’Antoni. “There was an objection from the defense counsel. And then the defendant [Oliver] said to the jury, I don’t understand the f***ing question.”
Oliver’s defense in the shooting is that he was protecting his partner. He testified that he thought the car Edwards was riding in was going to run his partner over.
Closing arguments are scheduled to begin Monday.
