Escapees of Johnson County ICE Detention Center Back in Custody

ALVARADO (WBAP/KLIF) – Two escapees from an ICE detention center in Johnson County are back in custody after escaping Tuesday afternoon.

The men were being held on immigration violations at the Prairieland facility in Alvarado.

“Two men had escaped by scaling the fence at the facility’s recreation yard,” Carl Rusnok with ICE said.

One of the men was found shortly after the escape and the other was caught Wednesday morning. Investigators are looking into how the men were able to get out.

ICE released the following statement:

On July 31, 2018, at 1:46 p.m. (CDT), two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees escaped from the Prairieland Detention Center (PDC) in Alvarado, Texas, by scaling the fence in PDC’s recreation yard.  PDC staff was notified of the escape at about 2:15 p.m.  Johnson County (Texas) Constables Office, Alvarado (Texas) Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety and Fugitive Operations Team members from ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) responded to the scene.  One of the escapees was apprehended about 4 p.m.  The remaining escapee was arrested about 10:10 a.m. (CDT) Aug. 1. Neither of these two men have convictions for violent crimes. The circumstances of these escapes remain under investigation.
