Activists Pushing for Mandatory Paid Sick Leave in Dallas Call on City Council to Take Action

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – A coalition of organizations called “Working Texans for Paid Sick Leave” gathered at Dallas City Hall Wednesday morning to engage city leaders in its push for mandatory paid sick leave for local workers.

A petition to get the issue on the November ballot failed last month after thousands of the 120,000 signatures needed were deemed invalid.

The coalition is now calling on Dallas City Council to take action.

The Texas Organizing Project’s Brianna Brown told a crowd of dozens of supporters employers in Dallas have taken advantage of employees for too long.

“We are not resources to be spent so that businesses can thrive. It should be that business exist…that jobs exist so that we can thrive,” she said.

Brown said that working and being able to provide for your loved ones should be a right.

“Every worker in Dallas, every cashier, every janitor has the dignity to work and that every worker in Dallas has the right to take care of their families,” she said.

The coalition has several proposals, including requiring employers of more than 15 workers to provide up to eight days of paid sick leave depending on the amount of time worked.

The city council has the power to put the measure on the November ballot without a petition.
