Loaner life vests are disappearing at Grapevine Lake

Grapevine (WBAP/KLIF) – The Grapevine Fire Department says the loaner life vests it provides free of charge at Grapevine Lake are walking off with borrowers. It put 125 free loaner life vests on stands at five locations around the lake. The idea is take one, use it while you’re on the lake, then put it back for the next person. The fire department says it’s having a little trouble with the “put it back” part. The loss rate is running about 50% this summer. That works out to about $5,000 in missing life vests so far. All of that money comes from donations, and it is not inexhaustible, so the Grapevine Fire Department is issuing what it describes as a “gentle reminder” to please bring them back.

6 people have drowned at the lake this summer. None was wearing a life vest.
