CORPUS CHRISTI (WBAP/KLIF News) – An elderly man has died after contracting a flesh-eating bacteria while wade fishing in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District said the Vibrio infection entered the man’s system through open wounds in his skin.
After being admitted to the hospital in severe pain, doctors amputated one of his legs but that couldn’t save him.
Health officials said the bacteria naturally inhabit coastal waters where oysters live and can enter the body through open wounds or by eating raw or uncooked seafood.
