DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Texas lawmakers and school administrators are working this summer to improve school safety following the May massacre at Santa Fe High School and other recent shootings at schools across the country.
Senator Royce West sits on the state’s School Safety and School Violence Committee and told the WBAP/KLIF Lone Star Scoop Podcast that his role is to listen to suggestions on enhanced safety measures and funding and determine what the state can do to help.
“Too often what we end up doing is having meeting after meeting after meeting and listening to people and filing a report,” said Senator West. “Then we put that report on the shelf. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen this time.”
West said threat assessment can play a critical part in keeping school’s safe.
“We have to look at threat assessments as far as social media threats,” said Senator West. “We also have to take a look at the funding for these programs and make sure it doesn’t become a burden on school districts.”
West said that in many school shootings it is determined after the fact that there were signs that if spotted ahead of time could have prevented tragedy. The committee is considering several threat assessment programs and communicating recommendations to schools across the state.
The Senator expanded on threat assessment and other issues regarding school safety in the ‘School Safety Summer Series Podcast’. Listen to the whole podcast Here.
