Veterans Walk to Create Awareness for Mental Health

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – How would you feel about walking one thousand miles in the next 12 weeks? That is the goal of a group of British and American veterans, walking from L.A. to New York to raise awareness about mental health. There are three Americans and three Brits, as well as many supporters that will join the six on their walk.

According to Veterans Affairs, risk for suicide is 22 percent higher among veterans when compared to U.S. non-veteran adults. Former Air Force Master Sergeant Adele Loar and five other veterans walked through North Texas today, stressing the importance of finding help for veterans who need it.

The group wants to raise awareness for mental health issues for veterans. Loar said she lost her shoulder in Iraq and was given help to physically recover, but not much mental support. She said it was years before she was diagnosed with a moderate traumatic brain injury, post traumatic stress disorder, and depression.

The next stop for ‘Walk of America’ is Waco, and then on to Fort Hood.  The group is making its way through North Texas right now and will walk 1-thousand miles in 12 weeks.
