9-1-1 Calls Rise With the Mercury

Officials are calling on people in the Metroplex to be especially cautious and aware of ill health in the heat this weekend, with heat indexes climbing well into the 100F degree range.  The official temperature at DFW International Airport Saturday is expected to be 101F, but the “feels like” temperature will be 106F or higher.

Medstar reports 22 heat related calls for help on Friday in the Metroplex, and 18 of those seen were transported to hospitals; one person, in critical condition.

Medstar’s Matt Zavadsky reminds us that because temperatures soared early this year, we are not accustomed to the extreme heat.  To that end, he says muscle cramps and exhaustion may be among the first signs of heat-related problems, quickly followed by extreme sweating and nausea, and in turn, loss of perspiration ability, seizures, unconsciousness, and stroke.

Zavadsky reminds us to check city and county websites for lists of “cooling centers” for those who don’t have air conditioning, and to limit outdoor time with heat values so extreme right now.
