(DALLAS – WBAP/KLIF News) – Governor Greg Abbott hosts the first of three planned experts work sessions at the state capitol Tuesday, on safety and security in Texas schools. 23 seasoned professionals in law enforcement and school systems will gather to find common ground and solutions to school violence.
Garland Independent School District’s Dr. Ricardo Lopez says he believes a group this size demonstrates hope for a return to student safety. Lopez says he brings experience with School Resource Officers and border issues to the table. Lopez says he believes an immediate improvement in the safety of children can come from parents, saying it’s his belief more communication between parents and their children – and checking up on them – can help improve safety in schools.
He will be joined by Dr. Michael Hinojosa of the Dallas Independent School District and Texas Representative Phil King of the House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee, among other area community leaders.
The first of the three planned discussions in Austin begins at 1:30 pm.
