Tourniquet Applied by Plano Police Officers Saves Life of Local Man

PLANO (WBAP/KLIF) – The Plano Police Department said Monday that Plano Police Chief Gregory W. Rushin’s decision to approve officers being issued and carrying tourniquets with them is paying off. Rushin said that the department’s job is to save lives and this is one more tool that will give officers that opportunity.

According to the Plano Police Department, on Friday night, officers were dispatched to a disturbance call where they were advised a subject had severed his arm on broken glass, cutting his artery. When officers arrived, they observed a large amount of blood and an unresponsive patient. They immediately administered their issued tourniquets on the victim and he was later transported to a local hospital. The nurses and doctors at the hospital were able to provide him medical treatment and it appears the victim will be fine. The E.R. doctor advised that the actions by these officers administering the tourniquet saved the victims life as he would have otherwise bled out.

The department thanked officers M. Halpin, K. Mings and L. Diaz for their quick response and decision making to save the life of this citizen.
