Cornyn: Firing Mueller Would Bring Overwhelmingly Negative Response

(WBAP/KLIF) – Senator John Cornyn is joining the number of republican lawmakers advising President Donald Trump not to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Cornyn says even if the president has the power, it wouldn’t be a prudent move.

“I think it would be a big mistake for the president to fire the special counsel,” Cornyn said during a teleconference with reporters. “I have no doubt he has the authority to do it but I think the repercussions would be dramatic.”

The White House this week said the president believes he has the authority even though Mueller reports to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Cornyn added that he feels the same about the possibility of President Trump firing Rosenstein as he does Muller saying the reaction would be overwhelmingly negative.

“I’ve encouraged the president not to do that,” Cornyn said.
