Sherrard was shot and killed Wednesday night when he was responding to a domestic disturbance call.

He left behind a wife and two daughters.

Local non-profit “North Texas Guns and Hoses” gave the Sherrard family an up front check of $20,000.

The Plano Police Department is handling the investigation the case.

Richardson Police Chief Jimmy Spivey said because its the first time in the department’s history that they’ve lost one of their own, it was best to have Plano investigate the case.

“We have so many of our officers that were involved in this incident. We felt like it would be best to let Plano handle this investigation for us,” he said.

26-year-old Brandon McCall was arrested and charged with capital murder in Sherrard’s death. McCall is not currently facing charges in the death of his friend Rene Gamez, who was also shot and killed during the domestic dispute.

Investigators have not said what led up to the shootings.
