Vandalism at a Dallas Police Station Could Speed Up Security Upgrades

58-year old Brian Simpson (Dallas Police Department)

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – According to a statement released by the Dallas Police Department, an unsecured gate allowed a man to enter the central police station parking lot where he vandalized a dozen patrol cars.

58-year old Gregory Simpson was caught early Sunday morning in the central patrol parking lot on Chestnut Street where he reportedly used a sledgehammer to beat in a dozen marked police squad cars. He was arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief. Police said Simpson is believed to have entered through a gate that is usually secured with a magnet, but if it’s not closed the right way the gate will hang open, as it did in this case.

Dallas City Councilman Tennell Atkins said Monday that the city has approved funds to make security upgrades.

“We’ve approved it so now it’s up to the contractors to get started,” Atkins said.

A recently passed bond package also includes funding for several security upgrades for the Police Department.

“I’m going to be pushing to make there is a safety fence, or whatever measures need to be taken,” said City Councilman Kevin Felder. “I’m going to be pushing for that.”

No time frame has been given on when security upgrades will be made, but Sunday’s vandalism has prompted city officials to urge the process be sped up.
