DENTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – A decision on the fate of the Confederate statue in downtown Denton could come as early as next week.
An advisory committee spoke with an art consultant about the specifics of the statue.
Glen Nerwin owns Nerwin & Martin Consultants and said the statue is strong enough where it likely wouldn’t crumble if taken down.
“The good thing is that the engineers that looked at had found that it doesn’t have the expansion of the steel pins inside causing the rock to split,” he said.
The dismantling of Confederate monuments became a polarizing issue last year with many cities across the country voting to take the statues down.
Nerwin said he knows the subject is a sensitive one and didn’t expect to the process to move quickly.
“We work on a lot of projects that sometimes we don’t hear for a number of years and it’s been there a long time. We didn’t expect it to be kind of an overnight decision,” he said.
A public hearing about the statue is scheduled for tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Copeland Government Center.
