Dallas County Republican Party Sue to Bounce 128 Democrats Off the Ballot

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Dallas County Republican Party filed a lawsuit on Friday claiming more than 120 Democrats in local elections should be kicked off the March primary ballots.

Republicans said the Democratic Party did not follow election code and failed to get the signature of their chairperson, Carol Donovan, on 128 petitions for candidates.

The DCR are alleging that Donovan only signed a small number of petitions for candidates.

Donovan has denied the allegations and said the move is a strategy to divide her party because Republicans will likely lose at the polls in a largely blue Dallas County.

Representative Eric Johnson (D-Dallas), one of the candidates cited by the DCRP, said Congressional, state legislative, judicial and other local candidates have been effected by the lawsuit.

He said the lawsuit will have a heavy impact on minority voters.

“Texas Republicans are constantly looking for ways to disenfranchise minority voters. They have done it at the state level in Austin and now they are trying to do it at the local level in Dallas County. The vast majority of the Democratic candidates who were targeted by the DCRP’s frivolous lawsuit are minorities. This is just the latest attempt by Texas Republicans to take away the ability of minority voters to elect candidates of their choice,” stated Johnson.
