COLLEGE STATION (WBAP/KLIF News) – The One America Appeal Hurricane Relief Concert at Texas A&M over the weekend raised $2.6 million dollars but organizers said there’s still a lot of work to be done.
The “Deep From The Heart” concert featured star-studded musical acts and 5 former U.S. presidents were in attendance.
The campaign’s Jim McGrath said although the concert was a success, victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria will need long-term help from fellow citizens.
“There’s still a lot of folks that are struggling to get back on their feet. Knowing the spirit of the American people, we know if we get that message in front of people they’ll respond to it and they’re doing it in droves after this concert,” he said.
One America Appeal raised the money through several different channels. It raised $1.5 million through its website, another $100,000 through Facebook and $75,000 through Text to Donate courtesy of AT&T.
Ticket sales from the concert raised another $970,000. Prior to the concert, the campaign announced it raised over $31 million since starting the effort on September 7th in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
The money will go towards the Houston Harvey Relief Fund, Rebuild Texas Fund, Florida Disaster Fund, Juntos y Unidos Por Puerto Rico and the Fund for the Virgin Islands.
McGrath said it was thanks to American excellence that helped make the fundraiser a success.
“That’s what built this country and made this country great. It’s also the spirit of the people. When mother nature gives us her worst, it tends to bring out our best,” he said.
