Garland Mayor Steps Down Over Dog Park Dispute

GARLAND, TX (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Garland mayor has resigned over a disagreement about a new dog park for the city.

At last night’s meeting, mayor Doug Athas said he could no longer work with a city council that didn’t listen to it’s citizens. The flap is over the council’s decision to tear down a national guard armory building and replace it with a dog and skate park. The Mayor said in taking the action, the council didn’t consider the opposition or other possible locations.

Athas did not specify a date for him to leave office. He’s been on the city council for 10 years and the city’s Mayor since 2013. A special election would have to be called to replace Athas, if not the next regular election will take place in May.
