Texas House Speaker Wants State Preservation Board to Remove Capitol Plaque Honoring Confederate Army

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Speaker of the Texas House wants the state’s preservation board to take down a plaque at the capitol that honors people who enlisted in the Confederate Army.

The plaque was placed in the building more than 50 years ago.

The message on the plaque reads that “We pledge ourselves to honor veterans and teach truths of history.” It also said the Civil War was not a rebellion, nor was it an underlying cause to sustain slavery.

In a letter to the preservation board, Republican House Speaker Joe Straus said that the plaque’s words were not accurate and that we have an obligation to describe history correctly, especially on a subject as painful as slavery.

Texas has more than 180 public Confederate memorials including a dozen on capitol grounds.
