DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — The number of tech jobs coming to North Texas has one expert calling Dallas the “next Silicon Valley.”
Andrew Chamberlain is an economist with Glassdoor.com — he says the number of tech jobs, like software engineering, has gone up .5 percent in five years.
“It doesn’t seem like a large number in terms of percentage,” Chamberlain said. “But when you’re talking about the huge number of software jobs in the nation as a whole, even half a percent gain in your slice of the pie is really big.”
According to Chamberlain, that .5 percent figure has equated to thousands of new jobs in the Metroplex in just half a decade. He said things like low taxes and colleges that invest in their computer science programs lead companies to open satellite offices in places like Dallas.
“What we’re seeing is cities like Dallas, Austin, Raleigh, Denver, Seattle and others are starting to pull away traditional software jobs from Silicon Valley as companies open satellite offices,” Chamberlain said. “These are the cities those companies are going to.”
Chamberlain said the idea of Silicon Valley being the primary hub for these types of jobs is becoming a thing of the past.
“The next Silicon Valley is going to be a bunch of cities,” Chamberlain said. “Most of which have universities nearby that supply talent for software engineering and have lower costs of living, lower taxes, and lower regulations than the current Silicon Valley.”
