DENTON COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF News) – The first human case of the West Nile Virus for 2017 has been confirmed in Denton County.
Denton County Public Health said the person who came down with it lives in Little Elm.
The department’s Juan Rodriguez said they want people to realize that anyone can become infected.
“We definitely want to inform our public that West Nile is here. We have our first case in Denton County as expected. People need to be vigilant about personal protection. There will probably be more cases. We want people to prevent themselves from getting bit and from getting West Nile,” he said.
Rodriguez said the best way to do that is to drain standing water near your home and use EPA approved insect repellent outdoors.
“You can also avoid times that are peak for mosquitoes like at dusk and at dawn. You can dress in long sleeves and long pants, I know it’s warm, but that helps you not get bit,” he said.
Denton County had one of its traps test positive for the virus near the end of last month.
That case was also near Little Elm in an unincorporated area Northwest of Hackberry.
