Concerns About Growing Homeless Population Prompts DART to Increase Security at Two Downtown Dallas Stops

DALLAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Security will be increased at a couple of DART stations in downtown Dallas after passengers raised concerns about the growing homeless population.

Angela Johnson and Daniel Marvin board the train at the Baylor Medical Center stop every day.

Johnson told WFAA TV she’s recently noticed a change in the area.

“There’s a greater presence of the homeless population here but I don’t feel unsafe,” she said.

“Now it’s just full of garbage. People use the restroom out there,” said Marvin.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s Morgan Lyons told WFAA TV the two stops that will get the extra attention are located at Baylor Medical Center and Deep Ellum.

“They may actually start seeing things like police cars, squad cars with officers in there, walking the stations, walking the trains, going back and forth and trying to be more visible,” he said.

Michael Moreno of Dallas was attacked and seriously injured at the Deep Ellum station last month. The incident prompted Dallas and Baylor Police to work together to make sure that no one gets hurt.

“Sharing that information among the different jurisdiction among the different police agencies, we think, is going to be really important,” said Lyons.

It’s a partnership that concerned DART riders hope will make a difference in the area.
