DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Four North Texans have been charged in what is being called the largest ever health care fraud enforcement action nationwide by the Medicare Fraud Strike Force.
The schemes involved 412 defendants across 41 federal districts, including 115 doctors, nurses and other licensed medical professionals for their alleged participation in a scam involving almost $1.3 billion in false billings.
Eric Bugen, Jody Sheffield and Matthew and Britt Hawrylak are accused of taking part in a $36 million fraud scheme.
Federal prosecutors said from May 2014 to this month; the group submitted fake claims to TRICARE for toxicology and cancer screenings and received large kickbacks.
The four operated out of Tiger Racing Team and Zorin Holdings in Fort Worth and The Adar Group in Killeen.
Bugen and Sheffield are accused of giving Walmart gift cards to people in exchange for urine and saliva samples.
They’re accused of collecting samples from as many as 200 fake beneficiaries a day.
Each defendant faces a up to five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
