Monument to Fallen Officers Unveiled in Dallas

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – A private donor has unveiled a monument to the five police officers killed July 7, 2016. The monument, along Trinity Strand Trail was funded by a business owner nearby, Jim Lake.

Lake says he had originally planned an open space with picnic tables for people using the trail.

“After the events of 7/7, we changed course, consulted with all the families, DPD and DART to get it just right,” he says.

The monument includes a plaque and stone for each of the officers killed, forming a circle around an American flag.

“They’ll remind us of that night, but they’ll also remind us of why we wear that uniform,” says DART Police Chief James Spiller.

Dallas police and DART police presented flags to the families of each officer who was killed.

“He went out exactly the way he would have wanted to,” says Kristy Villasenor, the longtime of Officer Patrick Zamarripa who attended with their daughter. “He risked his life for other people and his brothers. He’s just a very honorable and selfless person.”

The monument is along Trinity Strand Trail near the intersection of Wycliff Avenue and Irving Boulevard.
