WASHINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – Former Governor Rick Perry has won confirmation as Secretary of Energy under President Trump. The US Senate confirmed Perry 62-37 Thursday.
During his confirmation hearing, Perry said he regretted saying he would eliminate the department during his run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. At the hearing, he said he has learned more about the department’s mission.
At the hearing, Perry said he had been briefed on “so many of the vital functions of the Department of Energy.” He says he now has a better understanding of how the department oversees the country’s nuclear stockpile and conducts research.
Perry said he was committed to modernizing the stockpile and promoting the development of American energy in all forms.
After his confirmation, Senator John Cornyn released a statement saying, “Under Governor Perry’s leadership, the Texas economy soared. And thanks to his commonsense approach to regulation and support for thoughtful innovation, Texas became a state where all energy producers could thrive.”
Congressman Michael Burgess (R-TX) says Perry will bring “long overdue reform” to the Department of Energy.
“I have great faith that Governor Perry is the best candidate to carry out President Trump’s vision to make America energy independent,” he says.
