DENTON COUNTY(WBAP/KLIF News) – The Northeast Police Department in Denton County issued a warning to local teenagers about the growing theft of the city’s Whataburger restaurants’ orange plastic order numbers.

Investigators said the thefts are part of an underground game that has recently become popular among area teens and a nuisance for their officers.

About two weeks ago, one officer found a teen driver in possession of 70 of the plastic numbers in his car during a traffic stop.

Police said Whataburger is having to order new batches of the number every week to keep up with the thefts.

The department posted a message to Facebook addressing the issue that read in part:

“We asked that you be aware of this and leave these items behind when visiting our local store. The issue has become very apparent when we (NEPD), at times possess more of these numbers than the restaurant does.”

Anyone caught with the stolen numbers could face a theft citation and a fine of up to $100.
